New HVAC installations are costly. It may even seem that things are only getting more and more expensive with innovations and improvements. If your AC or heating system is on its last legs, you may wonder how you would ever afford a new one. Well, thanks to the newly passed Inflation Reduction Act, purchasing and installing a new HVAC product has now gotten more wallet-friendly.
Inflation Reduction Act of 2022
Due to the growing inflation costs, the U.S. Government implemented the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 to try to slow down the inflation rate. This law contains programs and tax credits to incentivize homeowners to upgrade their HVAC equipment to more efficient models. Doing so promotes energy conservation and lessens our carbon footprint. At the same time, it allows people to cut some of the costs of installation.
25C Tax Credit
A key portion of this inflation measure is the 25C Tax Credit. This tax credit allows taxpayers to claim up to 30% off installation costs on their taxes. The total amount they receive depends on the region of the country they live in (North or South), what HVAC product they install, and if it is in the high efficiency-tier metrics and ENERGY STAR certified. See the requirements below according to region.
Heat Pumps
You can claim up to $2,000 in tax credits by purchasing heat pumps that meet the following requirements:
- Split Ducted Heat Pump
- North: SEER2 ≥15.2, EER2 ≥10, HSPF 2 ≥ 8.1
- South: SEER2 ≥15.2, EER2 ≥11.7, HSPF 2 ≥ 7.8
- Non-Ducted Heat Pump
- North: SEER2 ≥16, EER2 ≥ 9, HSPF 2 ≥ 9.5
- South: SEER2 ≥16, EER2 ≥12, HSPF 2 ≥ 9
- Packaged Heat Pump
- North: SEER 2 ≥15.2, EER2 ≥10, HSPF 2 ≥ 8.1
- South: SEER2 ≥15.2, EER2 ≥10.6, HSPF 2 ≥ 7.2
Air Conditioners
If your new air conditioning system meets the following criteria, you can qualify for tax credits of up to $600:
- Split AC
- Nationally: SEER 2 ≥16, EER2 ≥12,
- Packaged AC
- Nationally: SEER 2 ≥15.2, EER2 ≥11.5
Furnaces
A maximum tax credit of $600 is available for homeowners who decide to purchase a gas-fired forced air furnace rated at 97% AFUE in 2023.
25D Tax Credit
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 also includes Tax Section 25D. This tax credit equals up to 30% of the installation costs when homeowners choose to install an ENERGY STAR geothermal heat pump. This program is also available until 2032.
Income-Driven Energy Rebates
In addition to the tax credits, the Inflation Act of 2022 also provides homeowners with income-based rebates. You may qualify for either a 100% or 50% rebate under this program if you meet the following criteria:
- A household with 80% of the local median income qualifies for a 100% rebate.
- Ahousehold’s income between 80% and 150% of the local median qualifies for a 50% rebate.
Rebates are not available to those earning over 150% of the local median income.
